A Short Fourth Night

Shot one target; shutdown by an Aurora (and my stupidity)...

Captured with a Sony A7R V camera and David Levy 152 telescope (730mm, f/4.8), on an iOptron CEM26 mount.

All subs were 30 seconds @ ISO800 with 125 subs captured with 85 usable.

I did my normal processing with HDR processing added in. Normal processing is:
- preprocessing in Lightroom
- align, stack, masked stretch and automatic background extraction in PixInsight
- noise reduction in Topaz Photo AI
- star reduction/color in Photoshop's Astro-Panel extension
- final tweaks to taste in Lightroom
- used Aurora HDR for the high dynamic range processing

This was meant to be another multi target night but after shooting my first session of M33 I found I had left the Bahtinov Mask on the scope; scrub that batch. Shot another hour of subs only to find about 40 of them were seriously impacted by an Aurora.

Enjoy!

Auroras happen so often over our place they become more of an annoyance to imaging rather than an 'event' to shoot... Sad to say.

However, if an Aurora has the possibility of being phenomenal, I'll haul out a camera and lens to shoot it.

Looking forward to it! We saw some amazing Aurora in Alaska several years ago when we spent the winter in Anchorage!

Our two best recent Aurora nights were:

April: https://www.flickr.com/photos/brianallan/albums/72177720307750029

March: https://www.flickr.com/photos/brianallan/albums/72177720306964626

The March display was one of the best. I'd packed up and gone home from my favorite viewing spot when I noticed the Aurora had actually picked up intensity. I shot the last images and video clips from my backyard. It was bright enough to cast shadows!

But it is hard to beat the Nov. 2021 Aurora: https://www.flickr.com/photos/brianallan/albums/72157720117862122. Sort of my guideline of whether to set up and shoot or simply enjoy the view.

Incredible!! It's a good thing we have an atmosphere/magnetic field that protects us from the high energy particles!!

Great shot bwa. You can easily make out PGC 5899 at magnitude 15.49 in the lower left of the image very close to M33 and PGC 5694 at magnitude 16.51 on the upper middle just slightly right above M33.
