The three photos are were taken as a quick burst and I was trying to decide which photo to select of the three to show the pilot. To do this I enlarged them and when I did so, I noticed something strange. Look at the slits (probably air vents) at the side of the engine. They appear to be reversed in the second photo. I thought it was caused by the relative speed of my panning and the speed of the aircraft but this was a hi-speed burst and only the second photo shows a problem. I know there was no magical momentary reversal and the bolts are probably the key to the answer but I am stumped as to the cause. The printing on the plane doesn't seem to have been effected. The lens is a Nikon 500mmPF mounted on a tripod.

They look the same to me. Blurred but pointing in the same direction.

Look at the vents at the side, not the ones near the top.

In all three photos, the vents - the side ones especially - all look the same to me

OK. Look at the bolts. Do you not see the elongation in the first photo ... Upper Left to lower right
In the second photo Lower left to upper right. Are you using the Download enlarged?

Focus may be slightly different in the second shot..or you panning speed might have been slightly different. I can see a slight difference in the appearance og the vents, but they don't appear reversed to me. But I have experienced situations in which something that looked "different" locked into my perception as really wrong or really weird. But I don't get that here.

caused by camera movement up & down; show the pilot the third one, it's in the best focus.

camera movement on long lens will mess things up

Downloaded and blown up they look the same to me. The third photo is the sharpest.

I have looked at all three photos and the vents all look the same to me as well.

Shot 2 is very fuzzy in many places at least on this MacBook screen

I use FastStone Image Viewer to make my comparisons. This program allows me to view and compare up to 4 different photos side-by-side right down to pixel level.
I realize the focus is off. For those who did see a difference ... the reason I am puzzled is that I couldn't find an indication of the same camera movement on any other part of the plane . I thought the wording on the side of the plane would also show the movement (there are both vertical and horizontal lines there), or perhaps the bracing of the cockpit window - something, somewhere else on the plane showing the same movement. That is why I am puzzled.
Also, I guess reversal wasn't the best word but there is a difference between photo 1 and 2.

I agree but I think the first photo is the best composition.

For those who did not see the difference I am talking about. Normally I would have simply dismissed this as camera movement. I could not find similar movement elsewhere on the plane, and they are in two consecutive shots in a burst. Movement one way - then the other. I understand there is a logical explanation - that is what I am looking for. What caused this?

OK I just found a similar movement in the sun glint on the right wheel. I don't think it was physical movement but rather a change in the relative panning speed and the speed of the plane. Whatever caused it ... it was quick.
