Lightroom Denoise

I took some photos at my grandson’s soccer game, and afterwards edited them in Lightroom. I was shooting at 3200 ISO, and ran the photos through Lightroom’s Denoise. I thought the photos came out fine, but here’s my question: once I started the Denoise process, I got a message that said: “Time remaining 9 minutes.” Are other users finding that it takes approximately 9 minutes to run that process? I don’t know if that’s typical, or due to the specs of my Mac.

Thanks for your comments.

I think it depends on the size of the photo, but on my Windows i7 laptop with 16GB Ram, a SSD and a Nvidia GPU I get around a minute or less.

Thanks, that is way faster than mine.

It must depend on the computer, my Mac does denoise in less than a minute after I select which denoise to use.

It all depends on your computer's speed. I have learned that it doesn't always take as long as it says.

Mac Studio takes about 30 seconds.

Rather than just hitting the button "DENOISE", you may wish to manually move the sliders below that button to see if it improves the photo to meet your expectations. I do it quite often, and it takes only a few seconds. Using the button can test your patience if you are doing it to every photo.

Personally I think Lightrooms Denoise feature is a gimmick. I did a free trial of Topaz and ran numerous photos through it and Lightroom. I bought Topaz. Much faster, more options and a higher quality output.

What thomasm650 said. Auto denoise takes forever on my computer.

Mine processes in about 30 seconds... I bought a new computer with better specs to handle PS and LR. Topaz got filed in the trash after using LR Denoise... and it will likely get even better with Adobe updates.

It is very dependent upon your GPU performance. I've an entry level GPU with just 2GB memory. For me, a Z6 file, 33 meg takes around 7 mins and a Z8 file 45 meg takes around 12 mins approx. These are 'estimated' times shown and actual time is approx. 2 mins less. You are not alone.

For info, a couple of days ago I started a thread on exactly the same subject and some very knowledgeable members have given great advice. It can be found here https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-786198-1.html

I've found that investigating component 'upgrades' and options has opened up a can of worms.

I use DeNoise with Photoshop Elements. When I click on a photo to be processed, it usually takes about 10 - 15 seconds for it to be processed. Usually my edited shots are about 200 - 600 kb. I love the results!

From my own testing with specific high ISO images I've found PS/LR raw Denoise AI superior to Topaz DeNoise AI and will use it where quality is a higher priority than time.

Are you referring to using the PSE ACR module de-noising raw files?

Yes, mine often take 11-12 minutes; I’ve given up on LrC DeNoise until I upgrade my PC to get more powerful CPU and graphics card. Back to using Topaz DeNoise for now.
