I have been using the cannon rebel t3 for 4 months and It took great pictures. But since its black Friday... is the nikon d3100 better than cannons rebel t3 for sports and portrait photography? The cannon came with a 18-55mm & 75-300mm lens bundle and the nikon comes with a 18-55mm & 55-200mm vr lens bundle. Would it be better to go with the nikon even though its zoom isn't as far as the cannons 75-300mm?
You already have the Canon T3 and the lenses?
I've looked at the specs and it doesn't look like enough of a difference between them to warrant a change.
-About the same fps
-2 megapixels more resolution- you won't see it.
-Maybe a stop better high ISO noise on the Nikon.
I seriously doubt changing horses will make any difference in your photos.
What kind of sports? For low- light indoor stuff you'll need a faster lens.
I suggest:
Learn to use your Canon better.
Buy a flash if you don't have one and learn how to use it.
Buy a nice prime lens. (A Nifty 50 for portraits and a pop-open reflector.)
Low light sports. Football and basketball and volleyball.

Once you start investing in fast, quality lenses you'll wonder how you ever lived without. My vote goes to lenses.

Camera is OK. You need fast glass - Goofy is right - think about the 50mm 1.8 or 85mm 1.8. For most sports if you are not on the immediate sideline, the 85 is far superior.
For NIGHT football, you really need the 70-200 2.8, but at around $2400 maybe that is more than you want to spend. Anything less, you might as well just watch and enjoy the game as you will never be close enough. Even the 85 will be pitiful.
For daytime football either of the long lenses are fine. The trick is to WAIT until the play is close and not get suckered into shooting stuff across the field. It is never any good...I know.
Rent one (fast zoom) if you really want to torture yourself.
You will never go back to kit lenses again.
Thank you everyone! U have been very helpful. I decided to stick with the canon
Good call.
(Cannon- fires a projectile.
Canon- takes pictures.)
Thanks for the lens options.
Fast glass is the best option. Thers to little a difference to upgrade body.
It's not the camera. It is the lens you use. Buy a good fast lens for sports and use a tri-pod when possible.

As usual, Goofy and the Captain had the answer. If you go for a heavier lens consider adding a monopod to you setup. Makes holding the bigger lens and camera a much easier job for the duration of a football game.
