If the serial number says that it is a IIIF, why would you doubt it. Without having it in my hands I would say it is indeed a IIIF. Put a roll of film in it and give it a try. If you don't mind telling, what did you pay for it?

Im thinking its a iiic, or at least it was a iiic long ago. No pix of the rear where the flash socket should be on a iiif.

Not a IIIf, and I don’t think even a IIIc, but older than that. The IIIf had flash sync, the viewfinder and rangefinder view windows touched, and the shutter went to 1/1000. Some had self timers.

In the late 40s and early 50s Older models could be updated to the IIIf at the factory, and many had new rangefinders, flash sync, self timers, and slow speeds added. So there are a lot of IIIf cameras today that weren’t born that way.

With fewer options, and a lower price, you could get a I model, a II model, or the III model. Except for the very early models they were the same body size and pretty modular. Parts for one could fit others. And often did.

There is a facebook group for Leica III camera owners. Send you pictures to them and their trivia experts can help get your camera’s DNA and family tree sorted out in no time.

I'm 90% sure its a IIIf. I had one many years ago and I'm pretty sure while this one probably pre dates mine looking at the serial number, its very similar to the one I had. (irrelevant, but I still have 2 M3's and several lenses, light meters etc.)

According to Dennis Laney, in his Leica Collectors Guide (1992), this is a III Chrome produced in 1933. Not bad for a 90 year old Leica!

Thank you for steering us toward the fact that the best updated replacement for an ancient Leica is acoarst a Sony !
