As I stated in the earlier thread, this is basically a Micro 4/3 version of the S5 IIX with evolved and advanced features, but no fan. The body is really the same chassis as the S5 II/IIX, but instead of the fan, the in-body image stabilizer has been enlarged and enhanced to handle eight stops of shake reduction out to 60 real mm, or 120mm full frame equivalent. In Dual IS 2 mode, stabilization drops to 7.5 stops, due to lens OIS limits.

PDAF has been tweaked, based on user inputs from S5 II/IIX owners. The sensor is totally new, 25.2 MP. The processor is the L-squared (Leica x Lumix) partnership technology. It now provides a Leica monochrome profile! That profile works in both stills and videos.

Raw files are 16-bits, recorded with dynamic range boost. Base ISO is now 100, as a result. Full V-Log is included. Real Time LUTs are included (download your own lookup tables to get any color you want baked into your files). This effectively lets users create their own "My Photo Styles" in Photoshop, and export them to the camera as .cube files with 33 precision. You can keep ten in the camera...

Video includes waveform, vector scope, and nearly all the usual Lumix video features used in other cameras.

Two new lenses announced, and both are Leica DG updates.

> The 35-100mm f/2.8 is now a Leica DG-compliant lens (the third version of this lens).

> The real excitement is the highly refined version of the 100-400mm f/4-f/6.3. The 100-400 now works with a 2X teleconverter for 400 to 1600mm full frame equivalent coverage!

Continuous flash in burst mode, with both Panasonic and third-party flashes!

There is tons more to absorb in all the reviews from early testers, on DPReview and PetaPixel and YouTube.

I was hoping for a lower price! On B&H it is $1000 more than the "regular" and existing G9.

Not likely... It's based on the S5 IIX full frame body — same chassis, new m43 PDAF sensor, no fan, better IBIS...

It'll probably come down in price in 2024.

The GH6 was $2199 at launch. It's $1699 now. Arguably, the G9 is a better pick for most folks, due to PDAF and L^2 processor with much better image processing. And with an external SSD, you get almost all the video features of the GH6, and certainly enough for all but feature film level production.

Watch the video I posted from Hugh Brownstone of Three Men and an Elephant. He has some interesting observations ,thoughts and conclusions, including comparisons of G9II images vs fullframe images he has made of similar subjects. I would love your comments on Hugh's video. Hugh is a well-known, well-experienced photographer, instructor and youtube content creator.

He has used and owned all brands, all formats, and Hugh is also a member of one of the Facebook Photography Groups I administrate. Cheers

Second one I watched after PetaPixels.

Hugh is a long-time favorite of mine. He knows gear as well as anyone reviewing it. Will he return to LUMIX? We will see…

Apart from the poor focusing (compared to equivalent Olympus bodies), the only downside I saw to the original G9 I had was the size. It was enough bigger to not fit comfortably in the small (compared to what I'd been carrying for full size Nikon equipment for 40+ years) bags I had bought for the Olympus EM-1 equipment I already had when I got the G9.

But if I can still do arithmetic correctly, it looks to me like the G9 II is 2.6mm NARROWER and 1.5mm SHALLOWER than the original G9. Only the 5mm of additional height is bigger, and that's less than 1/4 inch. I will be very interested to see how the new one fits in the Olympus-sized bags I still use, once I can get my hands on one. (The additional weight strikes me as little enough to pay for the additional performance that the new innards bring to the package.)

The G9 II and the S5 II full frame bodies are using nearly the same chassis and many of the same components. But of course, m43 lenses are half to a third the size and prices of their full frame equivalents.

Hugh Brownstone's video that Gerald linked above has some amazing comparisons of G9 II output with other cameras.

Speaking of arithmetic, my math suggests a new bag, or even two, is waaaaaay cheaper than a new camera ?
