The first time I came across one of those spiders when we lived in Central Florida shocked me.
So BIG.
Then we got used to them.
My 14-year-old son then let one crawl onto his hand walk all over him.
I then let it walk on me.
Damn what a weird feeling!
We don't have them back here in NY.

BTW that is sure a great photo.
When I tried getting close to them, they always started to shake their web.
Could never get one in focus.

David I admire your post song like title and certainly the photo. The title and image tell a story well. Titles are so very important. You ask where have all the butterflies gone, Pete Seeger asked where the flowers gone. He could add a stanza where have all the butterflies gone to his song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS3-lyqCl80

Such a colorful and great hunter it is demeaning that we call it, as we all do, something so mundane as "Yellow Garden Spider." The name removes some of the primitive terror we have of these big one inch spiders. Adding the word "carnivores " would help as would the word "fanged." "Feared Carnivorous Fanged Spider" lurking in our garden warning us with its yellow and black flags of doom.

I recall the terror as a young little shirtless three foot child running thru a path with tall weeds on each side... The web was across the narrow path and impinged on my chest... I like the butterfly was caught in the web... that is where the memory ends... with a primitively instinctual full-blown arachnophobia, the feared the carnivorous fanged garden spider attached to my bare chest. The memory vision ends there, but I must have wiped it off unjustly fearing for my life.
