I was printing four fifty-page booklets yesterday. With just eight pages left in the last booklet, the printer stopped - "not connected." I may have bumped the USB cable - not sure. What's bad about printers is that the only cure for this is to do a Restart of the computer. That corrected the printer problem, but now it's printing the entire fifty-page booklet, when all I need is eight pages. When a printer loses the connection, it's not possible to cancel a print job. By the time it gets the connection back, that option isn't available. At least it's an ink tank printer, so using the ink isn't a concern.

"Paper jam" is another error message that needs work. Sometimes, there is no jam. Sometimes, clearing the jam doesn't get the printer working. If a printer company spent a little time and money working on its software, it could rise quickly to the top of the pile.

Some printer have large enough internal memory that the print spooler (in the computer) has emptied, having sent the last bit of info to the printer. As far as the spooler is concerned, it's done, so the print job may no longer exist in the spooler. If the job still exists in the spooler, rebooting the computer will restart the print job.

That's the problem - the memory in the printer. I have to do an actual "Restart" to get it working right.

Why don't you get a laser printer for the brochure? Save the inkjet for photo only.

A laser printer uses a lot of electricity compared with an inkjet. Between 300W - 1,000W for the laser and 30W - 50W for an inkjet. At roughly $50 per cartridge for 1,200 pages, it would be much more expensive to operate. I got those figures from a quick search on Amazon. My original Epson ink is at about the halfway point after printing 6,311 pages. A replacement set of ink cost me $68. No laser printer for me.

The printers that I have allow you to print the page range, like page 42 to page 50.`

Right. Mine can do that, but only when they're working. The Epson just printed the fifty pages that I didn't need, and then I printed the eight pages that I did need. I tried to print something just now - "not connected." Super frustrating.

Yes, that's when starting a print job.
But if a job is already in the printer or spooler, one cannot change the pages to be printed.

Right. I finished printing a fifty-page booklet, and then I printed pages 1 - 8. After printing all that, it's unconnected again. Only doing a Restart will get it working. That's just crazy.

But you can go to settings/printers and cancel the print job, then fix the issue and restart, printing only the needed pages. Btw, if it’s a USB connection that’s gotten wonky, sometimes the best action is to go into control panel uninstall the printer AND the USB device in the USB section. The just plug in the USB cable and let it find the printer and reinstall.

It seems that every day you have problems with your kludge of computers, software, routers, printers, or backup systems. I've been using computers for nearly 40 years and rarely ever have any of the problems that you seem to have routinely. My printer, for example, prints 400-page documents without a glitch, ever. All I have to do is refill the paper tray.

Did you ever consider that jury-rigged systems, using bargain basement products, is at the core of most of the problems?

Yes, but not if the spooler emptied to the printer's buffer already, the print job is "done" and out of the spooler.

My 12 year old computer used to occasionally loose the handshaking with the scanner in the all-in-one. Had to re-boot the computer.
Going to be interesting to see if the new computer looses it.
