Yesterday was a about heat, humidity and the Devil's own armada of biting insects. Today, in contrast I was on the beach early this morning. At first I thought it was going to be just overcast; but then a window opened up in the clouds on the horizon and the entire sky lit up. The first shot is black and white and shot well before the light show began.

no. 1 I know that you are not supposed to have really bright objects in your composition because they take the viewer's eye away from the subject. In this case, I believe, the starburst become a leading line and bring the viewer through the photo.

The colour you captured in the sky is awesome. Equally awesome is how it was reflected in the wet sand!

It was one of those rare days where everyone is sure you are messing with the saturation slider. Thanks for taking a look. Always a pleasure to hear from you.

What a wonderful set with a range of photos in those conditions, Erich. Although the sunrise is spectacular, #5 is very appealing.

Thank you. I included that because I thought the lighting (which is mostly artificial) gives this photo a really unique appearance. I did not expect it to be as pleasing as it is to me; but it just worked. Thanks for taking a look and adding your insights.

Fantastic series, Erich! All those footprints in the sand are perfectly lit and make a more interesting foreground than smooth. It's particularly nice as contrast to the geometry of the solid lines and curves of the bridge, railings and buildings.

The wonky tower adds whimsy, the shutter speed just right IMO for softening the water. Subduing the waves makes the sky the absolute star of the show. Having several silhouettes of fishermen is lagniappe

#5 is of interest for a different kind of lighting. I really like how the pilings look.

#6 I need to borrow for this week's challenge theme in one of the flickr groups I joined (silhouettes). Think I can pass it off as my own?

Your comment, "I know you're not supposed to have bright objects..." is one of those broad statements that are meaningless once someone understands composition, impact and what it is they're trying to accomplish. Since you are far past beginner stage, please don't do that again

I read your comments with great interest. In this case I agree with you about the sand. The object that is the subject is obviously man made, so it would make sense that there would be a lot of people, and the corresponding footprints, around. When I shoot the surf and include the beach, I like the sand to be without footprints if possible.

The artificial lighting and the fact that it was still night time is, I believe, what creates the impact with the pier.

You can certainly use my no. 6 image for your weekly challenge; but you will, I'm sure, be able to come up with something better yourself.

It's funny you have such an aversion to black and white. I actually prefer it to color many times. Of course, when you get a sky like we had this morning on the beach, you have to shoot color!! Thanks for taking a look.

Thanks. Remember that I'm not yet retired, so getting up early is not really a chore for me.

I'm afraid I'd be kicked out of the group if I tried to pass someone else's work off as my own šŸ„°

Really like your second shot with the people on the jetty. Your last shot of the silhouetted man is a keeper as far as Iā€™m concerned.
