Recently purchased a Nikon 500mm PF... intending on using a TC1.4x [ either Orig I, II, III] - BUT when I looked at

a Nikon compatibility site, it states AF will NOT work??? That would NOT be good for me... is anyone using this lens

with a TC1.4x extender and IF so does the AF work???

Maybe the Nikon site was referring to older Nikon bodies, I don't know.. I have a D800e body, I intend to use for

now.

Works fine until you exceed F8.

What does that mean by exceeding f8? Are you saying, nothing beyond f8, like f11, and on up?

I have never heard anyone online state this lens had this compatibility issue? IF this is the case, I would be

forced to use a different body like a D500 or a DX body so that the grab length would be increased?

This does not sound good to me now... I had a Canon 500mm f4L, that I just sold with NO TC issues, but it was

too heavy for me to hoist around... IF this is so, I am NOW thinking of selling the Nikon and rethinking it all,

I hope that is not going to be the case...

so... thanks

This is from DP Review... someone there asked the same basic question. Sounds like it will work as others here have said as well.

Vince,

Yes thanks, that answers my questions... I also found a YouTube video by Moose Peterson as well, in case someone else has an interest.

I think the 500mm PF will work, if not, I may try the Sigma 500mm f4 sport model, which is a bit heavier but not as heavy as the older Canon 500mm f4L I model I had...

Thanks for the response... regards, Richard

AF slows down with the 500pf on Nikon bodies at F8 and gets worse as the aperture lessens, so I guess "does it work" has broad meanings. For BIF it is less than optimal and for quick action scenarios it produces less than desirable results due to slower focus. Check out the BackCountry Gallery/Steve Perry for some excellent evaluations.

I have used this combo extensively with the D500/850 and after thousands of shots, I rarely use the latest 1.4.

Hi Richard,

Glad that helped you, and thanks for the Moose Peterson video. I am thinking about picking up a used 500mm PF myself.

I have extensively used the 500mm PF lens on a D500 for the last 5 years. I often used it with the 1.4 TC and occasionally even with the 1.7TC (f/9.5). Auto focus works though, as expected, it is slower with the 1.7TC. It is a fantastic lightweight long lens. Since getting it, I have rarely used my 500mm f/4.

Well now ! THAT would likely very seriously impede AF performance, wouldnt it !

Thaz cuz an "f:8 limit" is not a lens issue.
Its a camera AF issue.

SO you are stating with TC1.4 and used at Fstops higher than f8, focus is slow significiantly and not good for BIF?

I do as much BIF as I have the opportunity, so that would not be a desirable comment for keeping this lens.

I will watch the video suggested as well. What do you use or would recommend personally?

thanks...

I would be using a D800e, do you think the f8 issue would be a problem on this body?

I would consider ONE of the z bodies, probably NOT the most expensive models to make this all work.

thanks for any input
