Maybe that's old school now? Am I missing out on a modern trend? Professionals don't use lens hoods now? They are only for amateurs?

If I have the hood, I use it.

I always use a lens hood. It's another layer of protection for the objective lens if nothing else.

I have them & use them on all my 6 lenses
Can reduce flares & aid in contrast and just in case help protect the lens

PS: I also at times use a Light Meter

Where did you get that silly idea? Professionals that are trying to put themselves out of business, perhaps. Makes no sense, I and all the pros I know use Lens Hoods all the time. I use them on all my lenses that have one available. I never want flair unless I extremely rarely want a natural Star Flair. After composing the preceding I checked the Link out. His few photos are awful. I rest my case. I was actually expecting to read that they were promoting SmartPhone techniques. I know there are add on lens shades for those. I often use a Tripod, and sometimes a handheld meter (Gossen Luna Pro SBC or Minolta Spotmeter F) and grey card!

Good Photography is not for the lazy. And don't follow blind sheep.

I believe the write up is crap
Have they run out of things to say?

Of course one can run and gun without the hood if he so desires, but to say "all portrait photographers hate them" is fishing in a desert.

Well that sums it up!

I thought maybe I was missing something.

I use lens hoods ALL the time.
It protects the front of the lens and keeps stray light from hitting the front of the lens.

(I don't care what others do!)

Right me too! I have had cases where the hood saved an expensive lens from damage.

Seems like the author should have known this. Maybe the author has all his gear provided for him he doesn’t have to pay for it.

I use the lens hood but not for protection. The lens hood is to shield out light outside the image area which could cause flare. I do not use anything for protection.
The guy argument for not using the hood because he wants flare that's OK for him but not all professionals flare nor why you want flare today but not in the past?

As soon as the cap comes off, the hood goes on.

I have only seen one working photographer that wasn’t using one. Don’t hire the guy who wrote the article.
