card life

I have several 4GB memory cards that I have used for ages with no apparaent image deterioration. What will be the signs that the card is approaching its "end of life"? With every upload, I check the condition of the card's metal contacts, and they appear to be in good shape.

They don't get sick or sluggish. If they fail, they just turn toes up; but I have a number of cards over 6 years old that are still chugging along.

Great question I often thought of. I also have some very old cards that keep on working. I have seven cards (none over 4 gigs) and I constantly rotate their use (yes, I numbered their card cases, so I know which one to use next).

Glad to see I’m not the only one who numbers my cards to rotate them. I do have some that I use when I have to that are 6 years or so, “they are slower”. The ones I use are may be 3years and newer, never had any problems. Just make sure you buy good cards and they will last. I buy nothing but scan disk.

They usually out last your camera. I've never had one go bad. I have a bunch of old 32mb to 512mb cards out in the garage that I have no idea what to do with. They cost a lot of money back in the day.

I don't think they wear out. The connection points might wear off but I don't think the storage chip can wear out or deteriorate. I think they can die suddenly from a spark or physical damage, but I have never heard of one slowly failing.

I had four xD cards, all under 1GB, that I sold on ebay for a few dollars. I got rid of them, and someone got what he wanted. Win-win.
