Not my photo--this is my granddaughter's photo of her sister in Cosplay makeup. My granddaughter left me an SD card of her photos before she left for France to study for the year. I thought this one is a rather good portrait.
Showing my ignorance - what is “cosplay”?

At first, I didn't know either until granddaughter #4 (in the photo) explained it to me. Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia which explains it better than I can:
"Cosplay, a portmanteau of "costume play", is an activity and performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character.[1] Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture, and a broader use of the term "cosplay" applies to any costumed role-playing in venues apart from the stage. Any entity that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject. Favorite sources include anime, cartoons, comic books, manga, television series, rock music performances, video games and in some cases original characters . The term is composed of the two aforementioned counterparts – costume and role play."
My granddaughter uses anime characters as her inspirations. She has an unbelievable number of costumes (she makes them herself) and Amazon wigs for her character roles. She has attended a number of cosplay conventions in Indianapolis and has made presentations at several panels at these conventions.
I with the gal from NM. I had no idea what cosplay was. I've learned more on this forum than I did in 5 years of college.

While stationed in Cuba in the Navy, my Commanding Officer was proud of the fact that he took 6 years to graduate from the 4 year Naval Academy. Of course, the fact that his daddy was an Admiral helped him get away with that!
And cosplay is certainly new to me!
Cool photos!
Very interesting and beautiful!!!

Great photo... looks like an anime (sp?) Character. Have a wonderful year in France!
Beautifully done, super creative makeup presentation. Of course, having a beautiful “canvas” goes a long way.😊
Great choice, John. I've only heard mention of this, but thought it was just a cultural experience endemic to Japan. Glad you shared.
Thank you for a great photograph and for letting me know what Cosplay is.
