Good post and interesting link, thank you Bob. I am reminded of one of my favorite botanical photographers on UHH. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-582729-1.html
She has not posted in more than three years, but her beautiful work is still accessible to us all.

HDR on steroids, one may try NIK HDR EFEX free for 30 days or their are alternatives. Indeed an interesting effect.

Thank you for presenting a type of photography I love to see. I only wish I knew how to DO.

The Harold Davis stuff is interesting and attractive but way to complicated/expensive for my simplistic mind/resources - but it has inspired me to try some different floral techniques of my own .....

He has two explanatory videos on YouTube. The first is here.

Also there is an upcoming Rocky Nook event that you can sign up for if you want to see the technique live.

Cost is low. Need only a ~50-70 mm lens, tripod, and good lightbox with uniform light.

I would guess you have a tripod and something in the range of a 50mm lens. All you need is a lightbox to experiment.

There are a number varying sizes at usaartsupply.com here

The Lightmaster lightboxes work great.

You will not get this effect with simple HDR techniques. Plus you lose the control over opacity of each layer.
