Focusing, then, re-composing

On a Canon 6D Mark II, when I focus on a darker part of a scene, hold the shutter halfway down, then re-compose, the darker area does not lighten up. It lightened up with the Canon 6D. What could be wrong?

You should be able to configure your camera to lock focus and metering together so that when you press the shutter button half way, it’ll focus and lock the exposure.
It is probably located in the Focus settings area. My camera identifies it as, AF+MF, either on or off. Good Luck.

Nothing wrong. You have AEL on the shutter.

That is because you are locking both the auto-focus not the exposure. If I recall, the Canon 6D Mark II uses the asterisk button for Auto Exposure Lock. You must have it set on for the shutter button when you recompose.

Does this mean the AEL must be unlocked? If so, how? How to tell it unlocked is successful?

You could try referencing the full user manual.

Confused re use of lock switch at the bottom right and asterisk button at top right.

Lock switch has nothing to do with AEL.

If youre not working a hurried situation, you might find it less confusing to shut down the AE and set everything yourself. Then nothing changes unless YOU change it intentionally.
