Moving on with my series relating a great day of photography in my back yard I ran across this bee-like thing with a red butt. I think it has been discussed sometime in the past but of course I don't remember. I am sure someone here will be able to tell me its name. Does it sting?

I thought the white hashmarks on the wing tips were cute.

Good set Dennis. Looks like a red-tailed bumble bee (Bombus lapidarius). They will sting if provoked!

Thank you very much bcheary. Trust me on this, I have NO intention of provoking anyone, anything, anywhere. I don't like getting stung.

Nicely done. Provoking a bee while it is foraging on flowers would pretty much require picking the bee up. It is also possible that if disturbed, it will inadvertently fly into you and get caught between clothing and skin. That could do it too.
