Is There a Cabbage Yellow Butterfly?

This morning while looking for insects to photograph over my back fence I noticed a butterfly that was identical to a Cabbage White Butterfly only this one was bright yellow instead of white. It landed near me so I took these two photos while creeping up on it. As I reached a point where I could see all of it and him see all of me too, he flew away.

Is this a variant of the Cabbage White or is there a Cabbage Yellow?

I’ve never heard it called a cabbage yellow, usually referred to as a sulfur.
Around here they are almost as common as cabbage whites.
Nice shots.

Thank you very much Bruce. Now that you mention it I have heard them called sulfur before too. It has been years though. Where do you live? Maybe he will return another day to give me a return match.

Kinda hard to tell Dennis but from what I can see of the wing markings in the second shot it may be a Cloudless Sulphur (Phoebis sennae sennae).

Thanks Doc for your always fine and helpful comment. As I mentioned to Bruce I have heard of a sulphur butterfly before. I am sure you are correct. He was as bright yellow as the cabbage butterfly is white. Very bright. Hopefully he will come back for round two soon.

Great shot.

You may have opened a Pandora's box with this question.
The genus, Pieridae, that contains the Sulphurs and Whites has many variations.
Hopefully this will help clarify it for you.
