New England Today/Yankee Magazine has featured the images of Jim Westphalen, who uses a 4 x 5 view camera adapted for digital photography.

Inspired by the likes of Wyeth and Hopper, his works feature the vanishing landscape and built environment of rural New England.

Having spent as much time in Maine (and NH, VT, etc) as I had (in the 70's thru the early 90's) and being an even longer time 'fan' of the works of Wyeth and Hopper (and others, from Hudson Valley artists through contemporary modernists), I was VERY interested in viewing the article/images. Was able to access and download the new, current copy of NET/YM, but saw nothing by Westphalen. That led me to accessing his website where (perhaps?) some of the images I'd hoped to see were shown in his 'Vanishing' portfolio. All very fine stuff. Like, VERY fine stuff. There was, however, one image in particular that stood out to me: it showed a house that sits along Rte 1 (I seem to remember it being around Waldoboro, or maybe it was somewhere south of Camden, I don't know any more) that I'd photographed any number of times 'back in the day'. It was empty and decrepit then, and its state of dissolution has only increased over the years.

Thanks for alerting me to Westphalen. I'd never heard of him beforehand. Can't really say I saw that much Wyeth/Hopper influence though.

Aha! Thanks again!

The second image looks so much like something Wyeth would've painted that it's almost.....

The B&W one with the silos and the incredible skies!!!
I can't believe I just praised a B&W photograph.
I'm taking some meds now and going to bed!

Stunning, moving photos. A fundamental principle of his work: Use color when appropriate and b&w when appropriate. Don't be locked into one or the other religiously.

Agree!...But I almost NEVER see B&W as appropriate! In fact, I can probably count on one hand the number of times that I have seen a B&W photo without thinking "wow" that would be so cool if it was in color! But that's just me!
