My grandson lives in a wooded rural area with some fields and three lakes. He collects specimens for me and I received a few of them today which included this tiny mantis nymph.

I staged the nymph for a focused stacking session using a 5X magnification Nikon Measuring Microscope objective as the optic for the camera. There were 219 images taken in the stack and processed in Zerene Stacker to produce the posted image. Each image was taken at a distance of 12 microns of travel for each shot taken.

The coloration of the little mantis was a pleasant surprise as it was so small that I could not see those colors with an unaided eye.

Attached is an image of the mantis staged on a size 000 insect mounting pin and a regular straight pin next to it for a size comparison perspective.

Beautiful macro Sippy, too bad something that pretty had to die for it.

Nice!
Did I ever mention that mantids have this little brush on their front legs just for cleaning off their compound eyes? I forget if I ever did (you know, old age and all). It's on the inside of the front legs, near the joint between the coxa and tibia. In comparison to your arm, it's on inside of your forearm near the bend of your wrist. It's very nerdy, but I know you'd like it.

Curmudgeon, I agree and I only collect specimens that are invasive, destructive pests, and that are in abundance. My grandson enjoys collecting for me as it is a way for us to connect with each other as I seldom see him. Unfortunately, to him, all insects are bugs.

Mark, Thanks for viewing. You educated me on the evolution of the mantis which prompted me to post an image of the "eye brush" of the Carolina mantis that was gifted to me by Bill (newtoyou).

Yes you did, but I am glad you reminded me because I had completely forgotten and I enjoy learning those little details about small creatures.
