October Annular Eclipse from Albquerque October 2023

I will be in Albuquerque for the tail end of the Balloon Festival and, more importantly, the October Annular Eclipse. My region knowledge is limited, so I am looking for suggestions for a viewing location with an interesting foreground.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Clear Skies.

Top of Sandia Crest, further south, Bosque del apache wild life refuge. See you there. . . .

Heading for the same place at the same time. I haven't decided on location yet but I bet Sandia Crest will be shoulder to shoulder. I'm thinking that someplace off the road would be better. That way I won't have to worry about someone bumping my camera. Hope to see some hoggers there.

Be aware that Bosque del Apache wildlife refuge is outside the max viewing area of the eclipse...not by much you understand, but never-the-less...

You might consider the Valles Caldera National Preserve

I live at Lake Tahoe and the path sort of follows I-80 for quite a while. Plenty of wide open spaces in Nevada off of the interstate to find your own space and lots of mountains for foreground. Took the photo of the total last time it came around in Idaho. Used the solar film 4x4" ($10 on Amazon) stretched over the lens and held on by a rubber band and lens hood for the shot.

Here in Dallas we should get 80-85 percent eclipse and then April of 2024 the full total one.
I am going to get the filter sheeting mentioned here in the threads and cover my lens.
Looking forward to your posts of your visit.
Bruce.

Here's a map created by NASA of the eclipse in October and the total eclipse in April next year. You can zoom in on the map to look for locations...https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/thumbnails/image/eclipse_map_5400.png

That sheeting is not easily installed, can come loose, and can have wrinkles. Go to http://www.thousandoaksoptical.com/index.html and get a screw-on filter to match your lens.

At 10.35 AM, the sun will be somewhere around 40 degrees above the horizon in the southeastern sky. Not sure exactly what you want to do with a foreground, but maybe you are looking for a fairly clear spot in the valley with Sandia Peak near the sun's location. Or a spot on top where you could see and follow the shadow.

Personally, I find that following people following the sun is more interesting than following the sun itself...
