Tech question: D850 and SanDisk Extreme Pro CF Express 64gb card problems

I used the D850 with this card and an SD 128 gb card with the camera set to record RAW on the CF Express card and jpeg on the SD card. I was traveling for a family event and used the D850 along with other bodies. I did not have the CF express card reader with me and so at location, I only downloaded the jpeg images and left the RAW until I returned home to download these to my computer.
MY attempts to download were strange. The Explorer window flashed the card directory off and on multiple times. I tried other USB slots and got the same behavior. I finally got the images saved to the computer hard drive BUT when I tried to format the card in the D850 it would not format. The red window with the "OK" selection did not respond, it just stayed on the format warning window.
I could not find any write protect switch on the card. I formatted it in the computer and then tried to again format it in the camera, but still not no response.
If trashing the card is the only option, OK. I have another on order from B&H. The irony is that I just read the thread on UHH about how CF Express cards are more reliable than XQD. Well .... Almost!
I would appreciate any help you all could offer.
Thank you,
Dave

I would use your D 850 and try and format the card again. Take out the battery from the camera. Insert it or another freshly charged battery. Insert the CF Express card. Turn on the camera. Click on the image preview arrow to see if any images are still on the card. Then reformat the card in camera. Maybe this battery/camera reboot might solve the problem.

If it is still will not reformat, make sure your firmware has been updated for CF Express cards.

If you have an XQD card insert it into the slot and see if the camera recognizes it. If yes, reformat the XQD card. It all works on the XQD card, then the CF Express card may be bad.

Hope this helps.

You don't mention which CF Express card you have? If Delkin, I believe they have a life-time warranty (I only buy Delkin by the way)? So check the warranty on your CF Express card? Since it didn't work in your card reader and your camera, it does sound like an issue with your card?
PS. How did you get it to work to transfer your photos?

I would try another CF Express card and see if it works OK. If the camera works with other CF Express card then I would toss the card. You didn't lose any images and your camera is OK so just toss the card.

repeated attempts "caught it" quickly to show the files which I immediately copied on the CPU HD.

The firmware is up to date. I just checked the Nikon site. I installed a fresh battery. No change in behavior.

Thanks Dave. See in your title it was a SanDisk Extreme Pro CF express card? If so, doesn't that have "limited lifetime warranty" (according to their website). If so, I hope you got your replacement card for free. If not, personally I would not buy a Sandisk CFexpress card. Sandisk appears to be having a lot of problems these days. I used to buy Sandisk SD cards but after switching to the CFexpress cards, stopped buying Sandisk products.

PS. I forgot to add that the card is very hot to the touch after just accessing the files

It is normal for the card to get warm, but not hot.

First...are you sure you are using a CFExpress Type B reader?

Are you sure you didn't overfill the card and perhaps corrupt it? I'd expect it to hold somewhete around 600 or so uncompressed full resolution raw files.

Are you sure your camera firmware has been updated at least to the version that supports CFE cards? Can't remember for sure, but I think that was Version 1.02.

I would try testing the camera with another card. I wouldn’t just assume the problem is the card. Also maybe try blowing out the card slot to make sure there’s no dirt or debris interfering.

To answer several questions:
1. the software is up to date
2. I did receive today another card and it exhibited the same behavior when I tried to transfer files to my CPU
3. I can't see any type B identification on the card reader. Even though nothing like this happened before, I'll get to B&H and see if they differentiate the card readers.
4. The card is not overfilled.
5. the camera records images correctly so I think the slot is clear. This is a very low shutter count body.

Thank you all for working this with me.

At one point you said that the card would not reformat in your D850? Is that still true with your new card? I assume this is a Sandisk card reader? Did you get it with your CFexpress card?

It may format without any change in the display of the "format menu". In my case the files on the card disappeared so It must be formatted? Yes?

It sounds to me like an issue with your card reader. I interpret that the card got hot while in the reader. Could be that the reader is either bad or is an XQD reader incompatible with CFE cards. Have you ever been able to download a CFE card with it? Does its documentation specifically say that it is compatible with Compact Flash Express cards? Even though the cards will physically fit, many XQD readers, especially older ones, will not read the newer cards.

My CFE card gets very hot in my CFE card reader, even after it has downloaded it seems to keep getting hotter and hotter. So I would not interpret the card getting hot as meaning anything. I remove my card from the reader as soon as the data has finished transferring.
