OK UHHoggers,

The Nikon D850 can use either XQD or CFexpress Type B in its primary slot according to the internet, which we know is always truthful. The CFexpress price has really come down. Example from B&H 128gb: XQD is $198 and CFexpress is $99.

Anyone now using CFexpress? Any issue swapping in and out CFexpress & XQD? I need additional chips but wish to keep using by XQD inventory as well.

Thank you in advance - Cliff

I use the CFexpress Type B on all my Nikon cameras that take it versus using XQD cards.

I use these cards fully interchangeably in both my D850 and D500. Never a problem.

Also...don't forget to check out Garland Camera for memory cards. They have some pretty decent choices at usually reasonable prices. You drive right past them (well, almost) when you come to town for meetings.

If you haven't already done it, you need to update firmware to at least 'Firmware Version 1.20'

Are XQD cards even being developed and manufactured these days? I assumed the crazy prices were due to the existing inventory being used up.

The CFExpress Type B work great and I think their transfer rates and capacities are higher than the XQD. Again I suspect that there is no new development to improve XQDs.

Would I need a different card reader for CFExpress than for CQD?

128 vs 256? Is one more reliable than the other? I have the D850 and the D500.
Will it work in Z8 or 9 if I ever get one?

XQD cards are a proprietary design developed by Nikon and Sony while the standard for CFExpress Type B was still being negotiated. They are still used in some scientific and instrumentation devices and systems. And not all cameras that use them have the necessary hardware and other design provisions to allow update to CFEb. So yes.. they are still used and will be, at least for a while.

I have both, as well as a 320 GB (I think) Delkin. They all work fine. My oldest one is four years old.

Ahhh, thank you. I was just reading that the XQD uses a PCI bus so it has potentially a higher bandwidth given future development.

For my previous thoughts regarding scarcity, I was thinking of an old story I read that said Lexar stopped using them. Also I had to go to great lengths to get a "NIKON" branded XQD card a few years back. They were pretty hard to find these days. It seems like Nikon has given up on the XQD tech these days even if Sony hasn't.

CFexpress works fine as long as your firmware is up to date.

CF express is no faster in camera, but the downloads into computer are. Work fine with recent firmware updates and are spec'd for the current new bodies.

Any feedback on the relative reliability of one vs. the other?

I used both in my D850 and my Z7 without any issues at all. But once I upgraded to the Z9s I sold my XQD cards with the Z7 and use only CFE cards now. Faster and I feel more reluable in the long run.
