The Canon EOS R3 represented a major step forward for the company, bringing with it the first stacked sensor in a Canon camera, helping them to get back into competition with the likes of Sony.
Canon Rumors is reporting that Canon is readying three new camera bodies with different stacked sensors. The EOS R3 was the first Canon camera with such a sensor, and it stands to reason that future high-level bodies will also employ such sensors. The advantages of a stacked sensor are numerous, including:

Increased readout speeds for reduced rolling shutter when producing video or photographing fast action
Higher resolutions without reduced video performance
Faster burst rates
Improved dynamic range
The possibility of eliminating the physical shutter entirely, as Nikon has done with the Z8 and Z9
It is a good bet that the eventual flagship, the EOS R1, will have a stacked sensor. I suspect the EOS R5 Mark II and a Cinema line camera will be the other two to initially get the option. Whether that means Canon plans to eliminate the physical shutter remains to be seen, but the move has been well received in the Nikon Z8 and Z9. Either way, it's nice to see the company moving forward with improved sensor technology. Hopefully, we'll see more cameras with the technology soon. Just more info to pass along for possible discussion...

The Canon EOS R3 represented a major step forward ... (show quote)

It will be interesting to see what the R1 and R5 MII have and what features.
So far Canon has been pretty tight lipped on this.
They also have said that there are several new apsc and ff lenses coming out but no hints as to what.

Yeah, I really don't care WHO is leading the field in sensor tech at the current time... I can't afford anything right now and using what I have has its own appeal... They will all utilize the same technology sooner or later so use what you have and keep your eyes on the SMALLER sensors....

“Using what I have has its own appeal “, well said. I’ve made furniture and other wood items using my grandfather’s century old hand tools. No, they are not as precisely constructed as would be if made by modern powered tools, but for their kids to say that their grandfather built it using his grandfather’s hand tools also has its own appeal. Keep on snapping!

Canon is a very good, but cautious company, I have been thinking that the R5II will be a large upgrade from the R5 which was already a very impressive camera. I think they want the R1 to be a clear leader. If they pull that off I may buy one, I'm still using a 1Ds III and 5DIV .
I root for all the camera companies because competition pushes advances.

I hope they make a new "R7" version with this as well.

We get bombarded with ads and reviews ad nauseam, destined to make us feel we must have the latest and greatest "paperclip" of the month. Yet we forget the reason we purchased the latest and greatest gear we now have.

As I enter my twilight years I have to remind myself, "why do you need that thing" whatever it is.? I have a lot of gear, expensive gear and some not so pricey, I'm happy with what I have and wish I could use it more but life has gotten in the way and I miss it. Caring for an elderly mother who passed away a month ago at 93 after a long and expensive bout with dementia just puts it all in perspective.

Given the pricing I continue to see from Canon (and others) I wonder how our young people can afford to enter the field, professional or hobbyist.

Happy shooting

Why?
R7 is excellent and still relatively new.
Canon seldom cycles through models like Sony does.
Has the R3 capabilities in AF as others do, better than the R5 has even.

Yes the R7 is a fantastic camera...
But the R7 does not have a stacked sensor,
......and that would be a fantastic add to that camera.

See advantages, but what are the disadvantages of “ Stacked sensor & possibly no physical shutter”

I doubt that will happen even in MII version.
Canon is currently so far ahead of Sony and Nikon in APSC I imagine that they feel no pressure yet.
The a6700 is still way behind the R7 and it just now came out.
But anything is possible.

Altho I can pretty much use any lens on any camera (I have a reeeeally mixed kit) Ill stick with Sony over an R7 ... cuz IBIS.

Having far more Canon lenses than Sonys, I use the Canon lenses on Nikons and Sonys. IBIS has far more influence on my real world results than any geeky progress in imaging technology. Clearly, Fuji and Sony take APSC seriously enough to offer IBIS.

(I do have a few leftover nonIBIS Canon bodies that Ill use only with OIS lenses.)

Ps, R7 has excellent IBIS.
Sony a6700 5 stops IBIS.
R7 has 7 stops IBIS.
I think I would go with the R7, far faster FPS, much higher resolution and better DR among other superior features.

The R7 does HAVE IBIS
