I am going to get a MacBook to use for photo editing when I am away from my main home. Should I get the 16 inch pro or is the 14 inch pro large enough to use Lightroom and ps with. Also, is 16 ram enough or do I need the 32 ?

I have a 15"- it stays on the table- the 13" goes traveling.
Get the 32gb. It beats constantly paging.

+1

I have a 13" M2 MacBook Air. It suits me for both travel and desktop use, but my eyes aren't as good as they used to be. If this is going to be your primary computer, I'd go for the larger model.

Most folks can get by with a well-specified MacBook Air or Pro, regardless of size.

I would consider 16GB Unified Memory and 1 TB internal storage to be a minimum for Photoshop and Lightroom Classic. My M1 MacBook Air is configured that way. It's fine for what I do. I have never experienced an inconvenient wait when using it! It's fan-less, silent, and does not overheat. It merely slows down a little when it gets warm. Battery life is ridiculously good!

Professionals and power users who love to push the envelope (rendering thousands of images, editing multiple streams of 4K and 8K video, mixing dozens of music tracks, etc.) should consider one of the Pros, but under NO circumstances would I look at the 13" MacBook Pro, which is an outdated design and a bad value. YOMV. That 13" is not much better than the MacBook Air, although it is less likely to throttle because it has a fan. Get the 14" instead, or get the 15" Air.

The 16" is easier on the eyes when you're on the road without a second monitor. All the smaller models work best with an external monitor, extended keyboard, external APPLE trackpad or mouse of your choice.

If money is no object, get 32 or 64 GB memory. With 64, you get the M1 or M2 Pro Max processor, which screams when using apps that are optimized to use all those graphics cores.

For lots of information on, and comparisons of these computers, see the many videos on YouTube. Search "MacBooks" on YouTube and you'll find dozens and dozens of channels covering all things Apple. MaxTech is one of the better ones. But there are at least 30 I'll watch and respect.

I have a 27 inch iMac desktop for my primary computer at my primary home but I go out west for part of the year and need a travel computer so that’s why I was wondering if I should get to 14 or 16 inch laptop to take to a second home.

I have a 16" MacBook M1. My wife has a 14" Air M2. She complains about the weight of my 16" but it's much lighter than the old Win10 16" laptop I have.

Personally I like large screens for editing. I can see details. Of course my eyes are almost as old as I am so that's part of the problem.

I like the 16" M1 machine. It's fast and the battery life is really great. I can carry it around easily (got a case for it). Worth it. When we get a house I will connect my 23" monitor to it for a second screen. Maybe even two.

My last MacBooks have all been 13" models, from the white plastic MacBook to the latest (as of that time) MacBook Pro. But three years ago, I decided to get the 16" model and glad I did. I only got "middle" of the three configurations, with 16 GB of RAM, figuring I can always add more later. Why pay Apple several times more than you can get it on your own? Same with the iMac 27". Base configuration as far as RAM. Cheaper to add more later.

If you are editing, bigger is always better.

I don't think you can add more later. That used to be the case but not any more.

The new Apple chips are not upgradeable. Everything is on the chip so if you want to add RAM or memory, you buy a new computer.

Decide what you need in the future and buy it now.

The more memory it has, the less it has to write to the limited-lifetime SSD.

While Burk always provides the best answers; I would wait until Apple's September announcement. You will see new laptop models. The pricing of the M1s (I have the 16" with 16GB/1TB and works fine) will reduce even further. Also, the M2 Air. You then can decide size and configuration...especially from Apple's Refurbished Store.

I suggest the 16” which is what I have.
Get as much RAM as you can afford.
At least 1TB SSD drive.
