Went to a show, Corteo.
I played around with this, so it isn't a straight photo.

An interesting shot. I would like to go to one of their shows to take some shots of them - is there any rule about photography during the show? I occasionally go to something locally and soon get told it’s not allowed! Usually have managed one or two before being jumped upon.

I don't think that they have any rules before Covid, I took a real camera in one in a tent before Covid and no one said anything.

Here the rules of the arena took over. They publish that no lens over 3" in is allowed. I took a Sony RX100, a 1' compact camera. They wouldn't let me in at the security gate, and they said that no photography was allowed. I kept reminding them about the 3" rule, and they eventually called a supervisor, and she said, "What kind of camera?" I said a pocket camera. She said OK

I didn't take too many pictures during the performance, I didn't want to get in the way of the other people, but there were others that were taking pictures with their phones and I even saw a couple of compact cameras. So I wasn't the only one.

So I guess that as long as there was no flash, they didn't mind.

I think that it also depends on the venue. I think that the lens restriction of 3" is pretty common, to keep people from taking pictures at these locations. They say no professional cameras, and these are defined as a lens of 3".But with smartphones, I think that it is pretty hard to stop people from taking pictures.

Just remember, don't mess up the experience that others have paid for.

I have gone to other performances where they tell you no cameras. Once they told me to stop, even with a small camera far away from the stage. So I guess that it depends on the venue.

It’s an RX100 that I’ve used for this type of thing but still got stopped, yet at the same venue I’ve used it and the guys performing actually responded to the camera (I was front row). I don’t use the viewfinder or the screen (so as not to annoy folk) and simply aim the camera. But now the theatre has adopted a ‘no photography’ policy so that’s that. The Cirque du Soliel show will not be held there though so maybe there’s a chance. Thanks for your response.

One thing about Cirque du Soliel is that once they get started, it is difficult,if not impossible, to shoot them moving. The best shots are usually when there is a shift in the presentation that they do stop moving. And most venues (I think just about all of them) forbid flash photography. The ban is actually for safety reasons. A flash in the wrong place can have devastating results for the athletes.

We have been going to their shows since they started in Atlanta, GA, 1991. It was definitely "Nouvelle"!
