Casa Grande Ruins National Monument

This is another Hidden Gem in the area. It's located close to Coolidge AZ, but has the name Casa Grande, (Great House). It is claimed by 8 different native tribes. They are considered the Ancestral People of the Sonoran Desert. These people date back 500-1,500 years. This structure was completed about 1350. In 1892 the Casa Grande became the nation's first archeological reserve.
The walls face NSEW and have holes in them for astronomical events. It is 4 stories tall and 60 ft long. The structure above it was built to protect it mostly from rain. They used a mixture of sand, clay, and calcium carbonate, (limestone), called caliche. It took 3,000 tons of it to build the house. There are other lesser preserved structures in the area, but this is probably the largest structure of its kind in the country. By the way the visitor center and the preservation of the ruins are one of the best Free National Monuments I have been to.

There were two owls in the rafters yesterday, both adults. I couldn't get either one to look down at me, so all I got was feathers.
