Now, this is a strange thought. Perhaps you are in an office or on a bus or a train. You might be walking on a city street or in a store that sells groceries or hardware. You just sneezed. Why doesn’t anyone say, “Bless you!” anymore? Have people become so self involved they are oblivious to anyone else even if the person is right next to you in a room? People don’t say “Gezunteit” or some other acknowledgement that you sneezed. I am beginning to think I wasted my time reading the book, All I Needed To Know, I Learned In Kindergarten by Robert Fulgrum.
What a crappy world this place became!

Just curious. Did you respond or just sat there, hoping someone would say something?

What do I do? I mention to the person sneezing that they are allowed only 3 sneezes in a 24 hour period. That was sneeze number one. Usually it does keep the sneezes down. Kind of hard to keep sneezing when laughing.

Most sneezing is a reaction to some irritant to the nose. And it is possible to have a series of sneezing. Then, there is Covid.

Language note:
gesundheit
interjection
ge·sund·heit gə-ˈzu̇nt-ˌhīt
—used to wish good health especially to one who has just sneezed

German is one of my original languages. The meaning in my head is to wish them "good health".

A few years back I was on a software development project and we had several people from India on the team. We were sitting at a table each working on a laptop and a young India employee sneezed and I said "Bless You" and he looked at me and said you should not say that. You should say "God Bless You". You can't bless anyone! From that day I switched to God Bless You.

To him, I would say, " I, like anyone else, have the authority to bless anyone." And specifically to that Hindi, I would state, "Shiva told me so!"

Except for the "Excuse me," I agree. It's almost become a social requirement, like holding the door open for someone. It began years ago when people thought that your heart stopped when you sneezed.

Ummm, they let you go first to flush out a potential ambush! Or give you warning that the floor of the elevator is missing. ("Ladies first.")

As for the sneeze, it was thought to be akin to the "death rattle".

I've never understood why people say "Bless You" or Gesundeit at a sneeze. I never feel the need to say anything unless the person happens to sneeze directly on me then I would probably say something other than bless you or gesundeit.

Old Katholic whacko. If you sneezed, you may lose a part of your soul. So cover your mouth and pray.
