Chief, here in Eastern Idaho I see very few Monarchs around. Of course in California I saw plenty of them and in fact, grew milkweed for them to come around. The yard was sometimes filled with a number of chrysalis and years ago I submitted to UHH a photo series of a Monarch coming out of the chrysalis. Not here though.
Here is something you may not have known. The milkweed this red bug was on is like the milkweed I grew up with in upstate NY. It has big pods that when they dry out, open up for seeds to fly across the planet. I have seen that same type of milkweed, same as here, at the Custer Battlefield in Montana. But the milkweed from California is a whole different type of milkweed than these with the large pods.
