A somewhat different subject to my usual stuff perhaps. I came across the boat whilst up in the Lake District a few years ago. It's somewhere round the back of Morecambe Bay, toward Piel Island. The foreground figure and the guy leaning on the hull are from a shoot with the Ragged Victorians group. the other two are from a pirate festival.
The boat, sky and foreground are one shot (with some mods to the boat). Some textures of my own and a bit of smoke from a bought overlay. If you feel inclined your critique will be appreciated.
Very nice result, David, interesting composition.
Beautifully done David. I was just wondering where you had been. I think you handled the scale issues with the people well. I wonder how the girl got up on the bow. There must be a ladder on the other side of the boat

Thanks Mike. The boat was an awkward thing to photograph well but I liked this shot.

Thanks Jack, she shinned-up that rope hanging down the side just like a pirate should!
Very good, the only thing I find is the man in front looks to be floating on the top of the grass instead of sinking into it...

Ah, I see what you mean Val, that’s because I moved him and forgot to anchor him! I’ll attend to that, many thanks for spotting it.
Nicely conceived and executed, Dave. It must be rewarding to bring together parts from different photo shoots and come up with complex results!
Is the tallest part of the ship the wheelhouse? Those windows seem high relative to the man standing there
I like this one a lot! Composition, colors, etc.!

Trust a sailor to come up with that Linda!! You could be right of course - or perhaps there’s another step up when you enter the wheelhouse? If I’d thought of the point you make at the beginning it might have made it easier to decide on both scale and perspective of figures. I’d better take another look.
Putting shots together is part of the joy of compositing, for me at least. A picture can be created that is unique and usually uncopyable (if that’s a word!) as a photograph because they use unrelated images. Like an artist painting or drawing from their imagination. So, when I post on my photography group’s forum it’s a unique image instead of joining the list of ‘same’ shots.

I’m pleased you like it John, thanks for taking a look.
I really like it. At first I thought the people on the boat were too small. But looking closer I think they are the right size. What I think throw me off was the old salt standing in the foreground. Perhaps he is a tad too big.

The size of the foreground fella is a difficult call Frank, I’ve had it much larger and it looks fine to me! I don’t want to make it any smaller so we all have to live with it as is I reckon. I think Linda has made a good point re the size of the onboard figures and I will look at that when I can get back to it. Maybe increasing them will make better sense of it?

A somewhat different subject to my usual stuff per... (

Here's the revised image following critique - I think it's definitely improved. Whether it's strictly correct or not doesn't worry me too much, the 'look' is better, and I've managed to increase the size of the foreground figure too! Many thanks to those that contributed, both here and privately, it really is appreciated.
