Last Saturday I attended the boat races and a car show in Idaho Falls across Hwy. 15 from my house. During the event I happened to sit down by the edge of the Snake River and saw these damselflies mating. The background is Snake River seaweed beneath them.

During mating, the male clasps the female by her neck while she bends her body around to his reproductive organs – this is called a mating wheel. The pair flies together over the water and eggs are laid within a suitable plant, just below the surface. The eggs hatch and the larvae, called nymphs, live in the water.

Nature is fascinating when explained but seeing it is even better!

Thank you Jill. I completely agree with you. This was remarkable to watch while apparently everyone else was, Eyes On, the boat races and car show.

You might say they were off to the races, too, Dennis.

Well shot set Dennis. Very sharp for damsels in tandem. Sometimes it's tough to get the female in focus.Well done.

Thank you kpmac. You are correct. Probably a number of things to be said.

Thank you Doc. I always appreciate your comments. You are correct. I took maybe 100 photos of these things, maybe of 30-40 different pairs and a few singles. Many did not come out well at all or only one of the pair was in focus. These were my best and I like them a lot.

It’s not always possible but I get the best results shooting perpendicular to the damsel or dragonfly.

Thanks. These were straight down toward the water surface. That is all that was possible unless I jumped in with them.

Way cool..! I tried mating like that when I was young, but I darn near drowned and it hurt my back. 😁
