Can anyone recommend a site that has either free or low cost videos with good instructions for someone starting to take photos?

The daughter of a friend is having a birthday coming up and I'm letting her have my Sony a6000 (in addition to her birthday present). She lives up in northern Manitoba and has internet access. She's a teenager, but it pretty sharp and artistic, and is interested in photography.

Thanks, Dik

Thanks... Is there a good series on youtube that would be great for learning from. She's new at this, and I want her to get useful and correct information.

Suggest / forward these usage tips, rather than video author list(s):

1, If not already, create a google user account so you can save your own lists of useful videos.

2, 'Save' useful videos for recall or watching later.

3, When saving videos, create your own topic list(s) rather than one large 'dump' of links.

4, Search for info on specific camera model(s) and separately on how-to topics in photography, like flowers, sports, events, etc.

5, For useful authors, 'subscribe' to their channel so you get prompts for their new video releases.

6, Also use camera review sites, such as KenRockwell.com, for comments on the specifics of her camera model.

Shooting in Snow
Basics for snow shooting - overexpose for detail...

When your camera "sees" snow, its bright white color can throw off the white balance. The results will be a photo that looks too dark or bluish in tone. Some cameras have a snow shooting mode, to compensate for snow and lighting conditions. For those without the snow setting, use your camera's manual controls to adjust white balance until the snow's color is accurate. Watch your camera's screen adjust until the snow looks white.

Lighting tips for winter photos
Winter offers some fabulous light, especially in the morning and late afternoon. But it's tricky, too. The bright white of snow and ice reflects sunlight, and you end up with too much light in your pictures. This means less detail, less contrast, and washed-out colors.

You can try this trick also -
Turn on your flash: More light may seem like the last thing you need, but the flash actually balances out the light off the snow, filling in darker areas, so you get the picture you want.

"She's a teenager, but it pretty sharp and artistic,..."

My sharp and artistic teenage granddaughters have taught me that the world has changed. We don't get to feed them knowledge as much as they will seek it.

Might be a little behind in the times but, Bryan Peterson's book - Understanding Exposure is a pretty good place to start. Probably can get one used somewhere & pretty sure B&N still sells it new.
I haven't watch this but you might want to scan through it (has a timeline below in the info) & pass it along.

If she's a sharp teenager she'll figure it all out long before you do. LOL

I'll try to dig up a copy of Peterson's book. I'm a bit of a dinosaur, and I still think that books are useful.

Thanks...
