Online Directions? Why Bother?

I'd like to copy files from the D drive on one computer to the D drive on a different computer by using my network, both are in my house. I followed (at least) three sets of directions online, but nothing works. Is it really possible to let one computer connect with another through a network?

It would be easy enough to remove the "donating" D drive and put it into the other computer, but networks are supposed to work, right? It's a "net" that "works."

Any suggestions gladly accepted. - Windows 10 on both machines.

Yes, I do it with our Windows PCs.

Since our network is PW protected, I go to the "from" folder on the from device, properties, sharing, add "everyone".
It may take a minute for the PC to adjust. It has to be done with each folder you want to share.
I still have a problem that I need to investigate: when my wife's laptop tries to see the desktop, it asks for access credentials. No idea what it wants. But my laptop can interchange with the desktop no problem. All three are Win 11.

Is the target device powered on and logged in?

It’s a permission issue. On Win 10/11, most files are protected from anyone except the originator on that machine by default, and resetting the permissions on a folder isn’t always as simple as it sounds. A year or so ago, I sent Longshadow a PM with a link to a UTUbe video that walks you through the process. I’ll check my PMs for the link and add it when I find it later today (have to leave for an appt now.) but in the interim, Longshadow, can you find the UTube link and share it with Jerry please?

Yep! I'm doing it the old-fashioned way - copying onto an external drive from this computer. It's probably faster than going through the network.

Thanks. I've looked a couple of YT videos, but their directions don't match my computer, or following their directions doesn't give me access.

Copying folder after folder is working.

Without going hands-on with your network, I can't say what might be wrong. But unless this is something you need often, a workaround seems prudent. One such workaround I sometimes use is cloud storage as an intermediary.

In another thread yesterday, the OP sought an app for shrinking photos so he could meet email constraints. I suggested he use Mega, a free (up to 20GB) cloud storage site. I use this regularly to share large files, or multiple files, with friends. I simply upload the file(s) to my cloud account, right click the upload and select "get link," and then email that link to friends. The link allows them to download my offering without ever logging into my account, so my other data remains secure. This could also work for you if your transfer isn't too large and you don't mind walking away and letting the uploads & downloads to work in the background.

Ahhh, I did not keep it...
I was looking forward to you posting it (again) so I could maybe figure out my problem (above).

Might this be it?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-C3v82zOgE

I don't do individual file rights, I do the whole folder(s).

Thanks for that. I looked at part of the video, and I did some of those things yesterday. I'll finish watching it make more changes. Wouldn't it be nice if they had a button to click saying, "Let all computers on this network share files."?

TriX - I used the video I found, turns out "require passwords" was NOT OFF on the desktop (I thought I turned it off...). It looks like my wife's laptop can see the desktop user area for us, and the two other internal HDs (D: and E:) She'll confirm D: and E: in a bit.
Now I have to check the network settings on HER laptop. I'm expecting good results. Probably the PW thing.
(I SAVED THE LINK THIS TIME!)

Jerry - Thanks for bringing this up! MY fix was simple. Kinda convoluted, but simple.
One still has to go to the folders on the PC you want to share (with another PC) and "share" them.
We only have the three computers on OUR <private> network.

As we used to say "Now your cooking with gas!".
(Don't know why, but we used to say that!)

Yes, I remember that.

Etymology
From the suggestion, heavily advertised in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, that stoves using natural gas as a fuel cook more effectively than, for instance, wood-burning or electric stoves.
