Cell Phone Necessity

I don't like the current trend that requires a cell phone to set up electronic devices. My most recent setup was a router. I also have a watch that requires periodic "Binding" with a cell phone to get the time, weather, etc. For some reason, the watch is no longer able to connect to either of two different cell phones. If I want to use the watch, I have to add five hours and forty-five minutes to get the correct time. Several other devices I've set up also required a cell phone.
Another problem is the cell phone not being new enough to accept the required app. I currently have two cell phones, so if one can't download the app, the other one will. Someday, I'll have to buy a new cell phone just so I can set up the thing I bought. Ridiculous. I'm surprised the need for a cell phone isn't included in the description.

And I hate that they require the cell phone and not a computer. Setting things up with a computer is much easier than with a cell phone.

Exactly! I've you're setting up a router, it's most likely that you have a computer.

Technology attrition.
If the description references "to your cell phone" or "with your cell phone" that should be the first hint.
I guess to them it's obvious....

I can set up the spectrum router with a computer but the cell phone apps has mover capabilities.

That's what I've done in the past, but the TP-Link Deco Mesh router required a cell phone. Naturally, the phone had to scan to find the router, and that took several attempts.

I have an app on my cell phone that controls my hearing aids - the phone has to be connected to the internet to allow certain changes to the hearing aids - I’m not impressed...

i have a cell phone which i hardly turn on....i only use it when going out shopping or so alone....i have no idea how to set up anything with a phone....i do ok setting things up with a computer....and true, things are asking to be set up with phones....i bought a couple of things i had to return because they wanted a phone set up....

I've been adding more and more smart devices to my house. Many of them require using an app for setting them up. For example, consider smart bulbs. What could we use in lieu of a mobile app? How else can we set up a Wi-Fi connection? Well, let's see. I suppose we could pay more for the otherwise inexpensive bulbs to come with a small programming device with a display, just so we can set up a connection with the router and a voice assistant such as Alexa. Sure, that'd be just dandy. Count me in! I'd love to pay an additional $20, $30, $50 or more, just so I don't have to use my smartphone.
Many devices use NFC or Bluetooth, Jerry, on a mobile device for initial setup. This can be a tablet -- doesn't have to be a cellphone. Most of us have a capable smartphone and don't have as many gremlins as others, and many of us don't resist tech as much as others.

I have that as well. The Brand of mine is Resound, but I wouldn't be without it. My phone and hearing aids work together perfectly. Small inconvenience (well it isnt really even an inconvenience as my phone is always connected for data anyway), for all the features I get. Phone calls directly to my ears via the 'aids', radio the same, different settings depending on background noise. Magic recharging, not sure how it works. They weren't 'cheap' but changed my life.
Only annoying aspect is I cant seem to filter out the tweeting of birds. Never realised how noisy and annoying a bird could be. Only someone who has been pretty deaf for a long time would know what I mean

OR, only a couple of internet ready TVs and a few cell phones and/or tablets.
Odds are low for no computer, but still there.
