Another Reason to avoid all-in-one printers/scanner

Granted, in those devices, you get middling performers in all devices, but now, someone has sued Canon because their a-i-so won't scan without Ink in the cartridges. Wha?

They deserve to be sued for that.

I have an Epson EcoTank. It is awesome as an office printer/scanner/copier. I don't use the fax feature.

If you have an Epson, don't forget to print OFTEN to keep heads clog-free. Don't print borderless, even if it will. (Overspray ink WILL get on the rollers and ruin your subsequent prints.) And use all your ink within six months, to avoid it settling and clogging.

I quit scanning photos a while ago. I use a copy stand, my digital camera, macro lens, and two video light panels to copy prints. I use the all-in-one EcoTank printer to scan office documents.

Yeah, that's a complaint that goes way back. I remember Louis Rossman doing a video about that. Control! Control! Control!

I have a brother all-in-one color printer. It’s 10 years old and works great in printing (even color photos- but not inkjet quality), copying, and scanning.

But will it scan when it is out of ink? That is the subject.

I don’t know, because I’ve never run out of all ink, only one at a time. I keep backup cartridges.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a few years ago didn't printer manufacturers fight tooth and nail against third-party ink cartridges? This, because they made little or nothing on printer sales, and those sales were simply a means to gouge consumers on printer ink, which is where they made their profits. Now, it seems Canon has found a way to continue the scheme in another way. I've also heard about printers using some sort of software lockout of third-party cartridges, but I've also heard there are workarounds for them.

I have a Brother inkjet all-in-one that hasn't had a drop of ink since its bundled cartridges ran dry. I use it only for the scanner, while using a laser printer for my monochrome needs. Anything color, I use a printing service.

I owned a Canon PhotoPrinter once, years ago. But I didn't print all the time so the heads would get clogged. When it finally died I bought an HP LaserJet at my neighbor's yard sale. Happiest day in a couple years, not having to waste time and $ on that inkjet.

I always worry when I buy aftermarket ink, hoping the printer won't reject it. It's not like I use it the day I receive it, so it's too late to return it.

Unless you print photo otherwise a laser printer is much better than an inkjet printer.

The electric use is high, though.

I just noticed an update on this topic at TechSpot.

I think that's good news. Too bad they can't create a super-class-action suit and add all other printer Cos that do the same.
