In Central Oregon I came across this sad grave marker of Henry Beck. In case you have difficulty reading the carving, it says:

Poorly Born
Poorly Lived
Poorly Died
and no one cried.

Lowell

Wow, that's sad. I wonder who paid to have that big marker created and erected?

I found this in an Amarillo Texas cemetery.

Remember me as you walk by.
So you are now so once was I.
So I am now you shall be.
So prepare for death and follow me.

That does raise questions considering the inscription.

I think back in the day he died markers like that weren't as expensive as today. This is from a ledger in the late 1800s. Headstones were very cheap compared to today Even with inflation.

Mrs. Bruce paid $35.00 each for the two headstones for her and her husband and $145.00 for the granite dog

$35 in the late 1800s would be a month's pay.

I believe this was a sad life. I did some genealogical research on him and found nothing beyond what was on Findagrave, namely the information you already shared. He had no spouse and no children and his parents were unknown. I am thinking he had no one to leave his money to so he left it to himself in the form of that marker with its lonely epitath. It is possible that I am related to Mr. Beck. My great grandmother on my father's side was a Beck whose family was originally from Germany.

That $35 would be around $1,300 in today's money. Also, that must be a hard stone to be still so legible after 124 years. Sad for Mr. Beck to have had a life of despair. My observation is, however, that not all poor, single people have to be sad. Many have joy in their hearts and spread that joy to others.

You are correct. Also the stone is what I believe to be called greystone. It was used a lot for that purpose in that time period. Not as hard as granite ect

My thoughts also. Surely someone cared.

Hard to resist.

"Under Beck and call"

Serious note: I always stopped at cemeteries to look for interesting stonework. Sometimes, rather interesting commentaries were read.
