I think this is some type of hawk but the merlin app can't id... can anyone I'd this guy? Not the greatest pic but we were on Lake Darling in Carpio ND and it was windy and smokey!

That looks like an Osprey to me.

I dont think the head looks right for an osprey. And it's a lot larger than an osprey.

Are you sure? This is a Ferruginous hawk from the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum raptor free-flight show in Tucson.

Based on what I see in the photograph I stand by my identification. Ferruginous Hawks are summer breeders where the OP took the picture. They are relatively common in the winter months in the grasslands of SE Arizona

So this would then be a juvenile that has not yet left the breeding area? Would that be why all the white feathers? I can find pictures online of juvies with more white, but this one has so much. I can't enhance it enough to get a really good look.

Could be molting into adult plumage, maybe just got through taking a bath. In any event it looks slightly battered.

The ID feature in Apple Photos says this is a (juvenile?) red tailed hawk, but to me it doesn’t look right for that.
