The snake is 18 inches long I didn't get too close. I thought he had very pretty markings. My husband said they are a good one have around because they eat rattlesnakes.
It does have beautiful markings
Good shot! They are very helpful snakes.
Wow what a great find. Take good care of her, she's worth her weight in gold.
They eat rats and mice, too. They also make good pets

That is the reason they are called Kings. They will also eat Copperheads and Cottonmouths if they get the chance. The other King snakes (many different Kingsnakes in the western hemisphere plus the King Cobra, and King Brown) also eat other venomous snakes in their neighborhoods. They don't restrict their diets to venomous snakes, they will eat any other snake, even being cannibalistic, as well as small mammals and birds. The Western Hemisphere Kingsnakes are nonvenomous, killing by constriction.
That's a handsome snake. I've been seeing them around here but ours have different coloring--you need to memorize the little ditty about in what order the bands occur to tell them apart from Coral snakes, which would be a rare, but not impossible, sighting indeed. I appreciate that you do not seem to be much of a snake fan yet you got its photo--thank you!
They are helpful snakes. But I still hate them.
Very nicely done , Sam. Great detail in the download. I guess he is immune to the rattler venom.

A Primitive reaction.
samantha90, a good photo capture that you did not try to physically capture...
In the mid-Michigan that I grew up in we had [?] no poisonous snakes... so to pick them up and play with them was great sport [Confession: to chase the girls who were afraid of snakes was part of the sport]. The snakes were "garden snakes" green in color.
Here in Florida, on a cold nippy winter day, I left my door open carrying in groceries... later... YIKES... in my bathtub was a large black snake who had come in to keep warm... I captured him with a towel and moved him to the nearby wooded area. I am glad it was the bathtub, not my bed!!!
Your Husband is correct. If you have a King Snake or Gopher Snake you won't have Rattlers or Copperheads.
They are good to have around.
Is this is recent shot?
With your hot dry weather you guys are having a lot of animals and reptiles are looking for water.
My Sister lives in Lewisville, TX and they have been having issues with Copperheads.
