Some of you probably know this, but you can download many manuals from online. I used to scan manuals and save them, but it better and easier to download the entire manual as a PDF. I just Googled "Qnap TR-004 manual," and I was able to download the manual for a NAS that I'll probably receive on Tuesday. Many sites make manuals available for free.

https://www.google.com/search?q=qnap+tr-004+manual&oq=Qnap+TR-004&aqs=edge.1.69i57j69i59i67i650j0i512j69i59j0i67i650j0i512l2j0i67i650j0i512.4455j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Jerry, the TR004 manual that you referenced I looked at described the device as a direct connected RAID (or JBOD) enclosure - not a NAS. I believe NAS units start with “TS”. Are you sure that’s the correct manual? The 4 bay NAS is the TS433.Nietger come with drives, so I’m guessing you’re using some you already have.

Yes many manuals are available online but since I keep my stuff for a long time I learned my lesson the hard way that is when the manuals are still available online I should download and keep copies of them. Later on manufacturers removed manuals for the older equipment from their website.

At work I had the User Manual and Service Manual for every computer in use. I brought them home when I retired, but finally deleted them in a cleanup after I replaced my PC. I had everything from model C laptops to the latest desktops. All gone now, but still at Dell.com.

Yes, indeedy!

I looked for a manual for the Qnap NAS, and I downloaded it. It was dated 2018. Continuing to look on the list, I saw a revised manual from 2022, so I got that, too.

I imagine that's one of many locations. I usually get them from the manufacturer's website.
Haven't had to pay for one yet.

Butkus is a good site if I can't find it at the manufacturers website. The manufacturers most likely have the original file (not scanned from a printed manual) and they are much nicer.

Some of these manual distribution sites concern me - they could easily be distributing malware.

Yes, they could. I prefer to deal with the manufacturer, where possible.

Just to let you youngins know you should read the manual. Most of the kids today know everything. The only time they need to read the manual is after they “misplaced” it. Then they search everywhere and end up at Ugly Hedge Hog. It’s a shame that people don’t *R*T*F*M* to start with.
