Ticket scalping for 70mm Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer was shot with 70mm IMAX cameras, but there are only 30 theaters in the country showing it in 70mm. This had led to ticket scalping with people paying as much as $75 for resell tickets. San Francisco has the largest IMAX theater west of the Mississippi, so the tickets are very much in demand. I started trying to get a ticket a week before it opened and I got one for August 8. I remember years ago seeing a restored 70mm version of Laurence of Arabia, and the image quality was amazing.

We got to see it in iMax on opening day. We just walked in with no reservations and I think we paid a three dollar premium.

That's what they claim. The theater was specifically built for iMax, and only shows those kind of films.

We saw it in 70mm Imax last night. It was discount Tuesday so the tickets were $12.00 apiece. And the theater was only half full (a real shame). And WOW, 70mm Imax made the actors so real. Even more impressive was the writing/acting/directing. It was a phenomenal movie and a true cautionary tale of eating our own.

Interesting - the demand in the Bay Area must be a lot higher than other places. The ticket scalping story was all over the local news. It is one of the largest IMAX screens in the country.

It was IMPOSSIBLE to get tickets at Irvine Spectrum Imax 70mm. It's way popular. But it seems that AMC 20 in Norwalk is virtually unknown by comparison. It's kind of hidden behind a huge County complex. I didn't know it existed until I was searching for Imax. There's also a Double Tree and several decent looking food places but none of this is visible from the main drag and was unknown by me and our friends. And Norwalk is a low glammer town, except for it's "Hispanic Beverly Hills" neighborhood. Mostly known for aerospace factories that are long since gone. The theater and food places need to raise their visibility.

We just saw the movie on an IMAX screen in Broomfield, CO earlier today. We reserved the tickets yesterday for about $25 per ticket including fees. The theater was close to full. Good movie, and we learned a lot.

Watched Openheimer last night at the iMax cinema and it is a brilliant film but I advise a look at what happened to Openheimer before and after Los Alamos and the trinity test before seeing it as it jumps from one time zone to another much like Chris Nolans Dunkirk film. Some great acting notably Robert Downy Jnr and Cillian Murphy in particular. Not many people know how close the Germans were to developing the bomb and that when they detonated the first bomb the chain reaction could have just carried on and wiped out the earth.

Something like 8 miles - oops 11 miles! of 70mm stock in a showing. The largest platter size ever used, I understand.

I asked because some movies are shot with digital then transfer to film for showing.

I think that was known as ToddAO or something similar.

The image quality of the restored 70mm version of Laurence of Arabia was so good because the producers scoured every film vault in the United Kingdom to find the original 3 strip color negatives to make brand new film printing units. It was a difficult process because film units tend to shrink at different rates when stored in different locations. I know, because I was one of the editors involved in the restoration.

It was shot on film.
I thought the full 70 mm showing was only 30 cinemas worldwide not USA. That is what I read. Note IMAX theatres are also showing 4k digital version of it. The imax in Melbourne Aus has both available but film version sold out till Sept 10 and no dates were show past that when I looked. Best seats for the film version are about US$45
