Folks this is for Japan, so dont be concerned if your fav brand or fav camera isn't in the top ten in current sales here. But it is the home of most brands, so it does say which brands are doing well in their home market.

Cheers and best to you all, whatever brands you prefer.

Local stores, although they may not "push" any brand they have their way of influencing which brand you buy.

It doesn’t matter to me what the Japanese or other people use. I like what I have and wouldn’t even consider changing because of popularity contests. These threads about the most popular cameras are a waste of time and energy and this is the last one for me.

If your brand is doing well in the home market, it might still stay in business in the shrinking global camera market,
and be around for you to enjoy continued models and continued support for what you own now.

Sales do matter to the health of all camera companies. You might not care to pay attention to it, but rest assured the camera companies are paying attention to what is selling.

Cheers and best to you all.

In addition to company strength and survival, position or popularity in a given market is actually interesting (and relevant to informed decision making on what to buy) because of the "Wisdom of Crowds" precept. Albeit somewhat controversial, the theory is that the aggregation of information in groups results in conclusions that are often better than could have been made by any single, even expert, member of the group. In particular group thinking and information processing, such as market judgment, can be faster, more reliable, and less subject to political forces than the opinions of experts. I think this can be especially true of a select group like high-end camera buyers, who are likely well informed about the options available.

The phrase comes from the 2004 book of the same name by James Surowiecki, but the concept has a broader basis.

Yodobashi is a Japanese chain of stores, and they release sales figures every two weeks. So they are a good source of information on current camera sales and buying trends.

It does not matter to me if Yodobashi sells more Sony, Canon, Pentax or Fuji. As a matter of fact I couldn't care less if B&H, Adorama or Roberts Camera sell more Pentax than Nikon. It is all irrelevant to me because I will continue to shoot with my old cameras.
If you think of it there is no reason to follow the sales of a specific brand if you are happy with what you have. Nikon could sell trillions of Z8 and instead I will continue to be very happy and very satisfied with my old Olympus cameras.
