I had to look up Imperial Beach, CA you are way South almost in to Mexico. I don't think I have been to that part of the San Diego suburbs. I have been to the old "Gas Light" area and several others.

I'm 2nd generation CA native (Born in LA area) that has traveled all over the continental US. Yes, Imperial Beach is known as the most southwestern city in the continental USA. (Would not move back to LA for any reason) If you come to San Diego again visit the Hotel Del Cornado then drive 10 miles south along the beach (Silver Strand) and you will be in Imperial Beach.
