Nikon Z7II: Need help on understanding viewfinder/monitor interaction

I know I should be old and astute enough to understand such a "simple" interaction between these two features on my rather new camera. I have read the instructions and tried a whole bunch of setting combinations but fail to get the simple process I want to set up on the camera, so it is time to call on my friends at UHH for support - thank you in advance for your assistance.

For the time being, while getting used to the camera - and taking off in three days for a longish trip, I want to set the camera so that I see the images for shooting exclusively on the viewfinder and see the shots I have taken only upon hitting the review button - and I want to see the images on the rear monitor screen.

It is my understanding that I should set in the Playback Menu the Image Review to OFF - and I have done so.
I fail to understand whether the monitor mode button on the pentaprism should be set at Automatic Display Switch or Prioritize Viewfinder, but both do not seem to give me the option I am looking for. For both of these alternatives, I can only review the images taken in the viewfinder and not on the monitor.

I know, this should be simple - but I just don't get it. What am I doing wrong and what should the settings be - possible there is another menu setting somewhere that influences the entire process.

Since I am leaving next Monday on a lengthy trip, I would very much appreciate your input - Thanks in advance.

I’m not familiar with the Nikon mirrorless cameras but on my Fujifilm cameras there is a button on the side of the view finder (or maybe the rear of the camera in your case) that allows you to toggle between the LCD and the view finder. You can have only the viewfinder on, the LCD on, or both. I believe in the playback menu you can select whether or not the image is displayed after taking a picture. Hope this makes sense. Good luck. I use z6 and z7 and cant get there. I just use the handy "pentaprism" side button, its there for your convenience. I doubt your camera is any different

On the Z6 (hopefully the Z7II is the same) while looking through the viewfinder, pressing the button on the prism toggles through "Prioritize Viewfinder". Select 'Viewfinder Only'. View pictures on the rear screen by pressing the button on the back of the camera, top left.

Thank you rwm for your comment. Yes, I do have that button and know how to cycle through the permutations. But I cannot understand why I should have to toggle, I should be able to just have the picture taking view set for the viewfinder and the review for the monitor. Hopefully someone else has the answer.

Thanks again for your input.

Thanks for your input. I am afraid you might be right - just does not make sense to me that I have to keep on toggling instead of having the camera set up to permanently do what I desire - that should really be a very obvious function. Thanks again for the information.

Thanks Bill - I am aware of these functions, but that means constantly toggling through these settings - there must be a better way - Nikon - are you listening?

You don't have to toggle. Leave it set to viewfinder. The buttons on the back of the camera will deal with the pictures on the screen.

Thanks Bill for coming back. That is my problem: when I have the viewfinder set to "Prioritize Viewfinder", then the review button on the back sends the image to the viewfinder and not to the monitor screen. Question: In the Playback Menu, do you have the Image Review set to OFF?

I have image review off. In prioritize viewfinder if you are looking at an image it shows on screen and in viewfinder. As soon as you press the button to take a picture the viewfinder reverts to shooting mode.

Thanks Bill, I assume that there must be something wrong with my camera - when I toggle the pentaprism display to "Prioritize Viewfinder" and then press the review button (with the triangle) at top left, the image only shows in the viewfinder and not in the monitor. When I press the button to take a picture, it will revert to the shooting mode. It seems that "User ID" has the same problem, while for you the mechanism seems to work. I will have to get in touch with Nikon, but probably can only do so after I return in 2 months. Thanks again.

Anybody out there with the same problem I (and User ID) have - or do yours work like Bill_de's?

I don’t really understand what you are asking, but if you turn Live View off you will only see pictures on the rear screen if you press the playback button.

Not sure if this helps, but look at "Setup Menu"

"Limit monitor mode selection"

"Automatic display switch" is not checked
The other three options are all checked.

Thanks Bill, good try, I indeed had the "Automatic display switch" checked and the "Viewfinder only" not checked. So I changed that - but unfortunately the result stayed the same. Buy I have a feeling that somewhere in one of these unfathomable menu labyrinths will be the answer. Thanks for keeping on trying to help me!

Thanks Mac - actually I don't see how to turn on Live View except through the "Monitor Only" toggle on the pentaprism. But unfortunately that does not work - I would say that this is a very strange situation.
