A White Butterfly, Another Grasshopper and a Fly

These photos were all taken around my yard. The white butterflies seem to constantly be moving and are hard to photograph. The ones you see here were about 4 feet below me on a neighbor's plant and the other one was flying around near the ground more than 10 feet away. The grasshopper and fly would be more macro photos. The grasshopper is the same one in all photos.

Hello. The butterfly is the cabbage butterfly. They are fairly challenging to photograph bc they are very flighty. The little green fly is a long-legged fly, which is a favorite for people to try to get real close shots. Their challenge is that their reflexes are so fast that photographing them with an ETTL flash can result in an empty leaf. The flash at that setting is really two flashes in a super rapid burst. The first is to meter the scene, and the second is when the picture is taken. But for these flies, that first flash can send them off before the second flash even gets there. So the trick is to shoot with a manual flash.

White moths, evolved into gray ones during the early industrial revolution. Those with gray peppered coloration were not eaten because they blended with the soot coated world. Ask the green fly in the photo, it knows.

Thank you Mark for taking a look. Of course you are 100% correct in these little critters being a challenge to photograph. The one closest, from above, maybe had no idea I was there and was probably just taking a rest. The other one was taken from a far distance and that was the only shot that was somewhat in focus as he landed in some grass. I thought the green fly was a long legged fly but wasn't positive. Right now I generally have not used any flash but really need to get my old, Douglass Moody, set up going with a deflector shield for the flash.
