Still amazes me but I know why... to get away from the heat and humidity.

Not only Americans - but the First Anybody to set foot on the Moon from Planet Earth.
That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for Mankind. (What Neil meant to say).
if they try to repeat it, they'd have to send 500+ civil servants (is that the right word any more) to carry out full risk assessments before allowing any highly paid astronauts to step foot on the Moon...
The pay grades for civilian astronaut candidates are set by federal government pay scales and vary based on academic achievements and experience. According to NASA , civilian astronaut salaries range from $104,898 to $161,141 per year. Less than a US Congressperson

Well in the interests of economy we could send Congresspersons, as most already have their heads in the clouds (so less propulsive thrust required), however the majority would probably 'find' a long unknown medical condition that prevents them doing anything dangerous...

These are not stock photos. I took them myself off of a TV in our house in 1969. I was 17 years old at the time.

I was just a young pup. I remember the TV being in the living room and dinner was being served. I don’t think I ate food for a week. What a phenomenal time.
I remember watching Armstrong stepping onto the Moon on our B+W Sylvania TV. My 78 y.o. grandmother was watching with us, and I realized that when this lady was born, horses were a common means of travel, communication was by telegraph – the radio and TV were not yet invented , and wondering what marvels I would see.
There was another message from the Moon a few hours prior to the famous one. Now that was a heart-pounder! Coming down, down, too much debris, gotta go further, computer shows an error code, gonna land manually, mere seconds of fuel left, silence, then the message: "Houston, this is Tranquility Base. The Eagle has landed!"

We were in Rotterdam, so it was the middle of the night for us. We were staying with friends, and all their friends and neighbors were in their apartment watching it on television, as nobody else there had one. Except for the astronauts' voices, everything was narrated in Dutch. When it was all over, they were so thrilled to have had an American in their presence that they hoisted me up and carried me through the streets for about three blocks as if I were the hero. Given all that was going on in the world back then, it was really nice to be proud to be an American.
By the way, despite all the problems I can name and describe, I still am. (I'm being deliberately vague here, so no politics please.)

I was in the Mang Yang tasked keeping the road open (QL19). We didn't find out about this until sometime in August. Just another day that ended with Y.
