I'm waiting to see how many miles they can run at the 24 hour race at Le Mans; an hour of excitement, then lunch and a nap while the car gets recharged!

Now that's a perspective worth contemplating. Thanks for chiming in.

Thanks for a great series of a great car. This 427 Cobra was owned by the well known racer, Dick Smith, who set the 198mph record and sadly died in a plane crash in 2007. I believe the car was sold at auction by his wife in 2013. Do you mind if I post an image of Dick with this Cobra?

I don't mind at all. It will add to the story. I appreciate the offer.

This has the big hoss engine. I believe I've read where it was the most successful racing Cobra throughout its career.

Cool to know. Have always loved Cobras. I had a 63 1/2 Galaxy with a 450 hp 427. Was a transplant before I got it. Still had the 390 emblems on the side. Dual Holleys which I guess were stock, maybe 780 CFM, I don't remember, with headers but I don't remember what kind. Been too long and the engine swap happened before I got it.

Enjoy your car pics, thanks for sharing.

That Cobra really took me back to the sixties. I got a lap in one on Upper Marlboro Md. Race Course. It was payment for helping the owner in the pits. He had seen me drive an Austin/Healey 3000 and said to taketh Cobra out for the spin of my life. On one of two strait backstretches I ad it up to 140-150 MPH and brought it back into the pits with a smile on my face you could not have knocked it off with a Louisville Slugger! Since then I have drives a Ferrari and a lotus but neither could match that Cobra. Pure power and excellent handling.
Thanks for that set of pics, a really first class set of photographs

I watched Dick compete in SCCA races at VIR (Virginia International Raceway) several times. The last race of the weekend was the A Production / B production race which featured the 427 Cobras vs the Vettes. VIR’s back straight is >6000 feet long, so the big boys could get up to full speed before the hairpin at the end. Here’s Dick with his #198 427 Snake. Just like the original image except you’ll note the Snake is shod with Goodyear Blue Streaks (SportsCar Special) racing tires. I’ve ridden in both the 289 and 427 Cobras, and the 427 is a BEAST.

I bet that Galaxy caught some people off guard.

It's great to have an interchange of pictures, info, and stories amongst car people....guys and gals. It's a pleasure to share the forum with all of you folks.
