Excellent documentary images. Creating and maintaining those Uro islands appears to be quite an investment in manhours and makes me wonder what advantage they offer the people over establishing their housing/villages on land next to the lake. They craft the boats to navigate the lake, why do they need to also live, literally, on the lake? Is it a defensive strategy for hostile tribes?

You know what? those are great questions to which I don't have any answers. Perhaps, as the old "Fiddler on the Roof" song goes, "Tradition!!"

Moshe Thank you for wonderful photos and explanation
I saw floating islands in Xochimilco near Mexico City
They were used from the time of the Aztecs for cultivation not habitation
It is a very colorful place
Again, thank you for the wonderful travel log you give us

Yeah. We've been to Xochimilco and it is, indeed, very colorful. The canals are gorgeous. Thanks.

Educational and infinitely entertaining.

I find it quite amazing that no matter what you take the images with, they are almost pure gold.

THanks again for sharing!

Very nice posting and very interesting and educational introduction. I like the images of Lake Titicaca and the floating islands. The Aztecs in Mexico, built their capital city Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco and they also built floating islands but not to live on but to farm on. Apparently the islands were were buoyant enough to support soil for growing crops. Amazing what primitive people can do live materials available.
