This was one of those "time to checkpoint" races that it is important to have a talented navigator so as to arrive at each checkpoint on the correct second. Some 150 or more antique cars gathered for the race. For two days they all went through a tech inspection and preparatory maintenance. Then they departed at one minute intervals to begin the race to Colorado Springs.
This post showcases the 1916 LaFrance chain drive car. I thought this was the most interesting car of them all. Hope you enjoy the photos. I never found a time when the cars were free of clutter from people or other cars. The photos are just what they are.
Very nice work. I was also down there wandering around. This car looks like it would be most uncomfortable after even just 50 miles of riding in it.
Nice. I remember seeing cars like that on highways around here. They all had a large circular sign on the side saying they were in a race. In England, they have the London to Brighton race for cars made before 1900.
What a beast!!! The driver sure has his (or her) job keeping this car on course with no room for a co-driver/navigator. You did an admiral job of photographing this competitor with the clutter you mention, beautiful photos!
There is a pair of brothers who convert tractor-trailer trucks into very large sports cars.

But there is a second seat for the navigator. The plastic container is in it in some of the photos.

The Great Race is great fun. You're right that the clutter of cars and people makes it hard to isolate your subject. Car shows are just as bad. If you have access and don't mind using it, I've found that the generative AI in the Ps beta works very well for removing unwanted stuff.
Of course you end up with an image that is not the one that you (or the sensor) saw, and dealing with that can be tricky.
I hope they all drove in the right-hand lane and didn't clutter up the passing lane.
Interesting photos and info.
