I noticed the same thing but those are for seedless watermelons. I have a feeling seedless is all the stores stock anymore because people don't want to deal with seeds. Too bad; they'll miss the fun, danger and satisfaction of blowing 3 or 4 seeds 10 feet onto your friend's arm.

I think it's a conspiracy by the seed sellers. Since you can't plant the seeds from watermelons anymore, you have to buy them. (I'm not being serious.)

Dear fourlocks,

I agree it used to be fun eating watermelons years ago, not any more because they don't have hard seeds now. What good if you can't send one sailing , I agree ! Chalk up another excitement we had as kids that is now gone !
Too bad !

Jerry, It mostly has to do with what species of watermelons can grow the quickest with the least amount of resources to get them to market and have the longest shelf life. Larger watermelons can be grown, that's not a problem. Time and expenses are the problem. The best watermelons will be the ones that you love and care for in your own garden.

My uncle in the 40s gave my aunt on their wedding a 6 ft watermelon he grew at the ranch he worked at.it took 4 men to carry it.the diameter was about 2o inches.

What happened to watermelons? I remember watermelons being long, but over the years, they have gotten shorter. I agreed to bring a watermelon to a local picnic today, so I bought one yesterday. What I got was round and smaller that a basketball - for $8.00! After I cut through the 2" rind, how much will be left to eat? No more watermelons for me.

Just like your ice cream, Jerry, they have shrunk-flationed your watermelons! For the same price, they can now pile 60 melons into a bin rather than the 40 they once could. By the way, if you are buying a melon, look for one with a lot of yellow on one side. It shows it was on the ground longer, ripening to a sweeter melon. Avoid those with just a small spot of yellow as they will likely not be sweet. Some of the larger melons used to be called Greys. They were long and had alternating stripes of green and grey along their length -- to me, they were some of the best and I haven't seen those around in the last three or four years.

Jerry and all!

I prefer Honey Dew melons! Better fruit-to-rind ratio.

Be well! Ed

If watermelons were any heavier we wouldn't be able to lift them into the basket and if we drop one you can only imagine the mess.you would need a flat 4 wheel dolly like the ones at home depot to carry it.if all that was possible then their is the problem of having to weigh it unless they are all marked at a certain price and there is the dilemma. We wouldn't be able to afford it.

I live in the land of watermelon. In fact, a family of mine that lived in Jasper County, GA, grew acres of them, but I can not find the old fashion watermelons anywhere now. The ones you see now are what I call man-made. Produced to have little or no seeds. They are smaller and do not have as good of a taste. Man has destroyed a good thing and the general public has accepted it. I miss my big watermelons with seeds.

Years ago, I grew watermelons, and the vine went onto the garage roof. Naturally, I had a watermelon develop up there. I have a picture of it somewhere.

Funny. I just said to my wife the other day that watermelons used to be a lot bigger. You are right. The price has gone up and the size has gone down.

Just like candy bars, eh?

The writing was on the wall when the Japanese started growing water melons square so that they could pack more during shipping.

When I was growing up in Central Kansas there were a lot of truck Farms which raised watermelons and other produce. There were two varieties of melons, black diamond were dark green and fairly round, it Burrows Gray we're long and light colored. They grow best in a sandy soil. Used to run up to 20 lb or more.

In store where they sell both the seed and seedless watermelon side by side the ones with seeds are more expensive but also much sweeter.

Of course, they're more expensive. You're getting all those plantable seeds.
