Black Carpenter Ant

I found this black carpenter ant, along with hoards of others, while replacing boards on the porch. I have several preserved ants, however, a fresh specimen always makes the best specimen.

This is a focused stacked session staged with a Nikon 5X Measuring Microscope objective as the optic for the camera and diffused LED lighting for the illumination.

Grays work well. This ant is saying "ya, wattaya going ta do about it?" The defiant jaw line and gritted teeth speak strong words.

Dpullum, It amuses me that ants have cooperated socially in their societies for hundreds of millions of years, and humans around the world as a species can't go a day without conflict.

What an awesome shot, would make for a nice Sci-Fi character.
