From those of you who have both bodies, please comment on how close the controls and menu systems of one matches the other. I have the David Busch manual on the D850 but I'd like to know if buying one for the D500 makes sense. Thanks for your help.

The control interface, control layout, and menu structure are almost identical for the D500 and the D850. The D850 has some operating features that were not available on the D500, so menu items for those are added. Otherwise, you can use both cameras side by side in the dark without fear. (You just have to be sure which one you picked up.)
I own both of them. The only way I know which one I'm using at any given time is the sound of the shutter. The D850 sounds like kicking a can down the road. The D500 has a very quiet double click sound that I really like!
And, as already mentioned, there are some menu items available on the D850, over and above those on the D500.
Thank you kindly. I just have one manual to learn.... and saves a few bucks!

Go to the Nikon website and download the manuals for each of the cameras. The PDF is easier to search than flipping thru hundreds of pages trying to find what information you need. They are free...

For all practical purposes the two bodies operation, setup are the same. Usually the longer lens is always on the 500 but some times I have to look at the name badge on the front before pulling a XQD card out for downloading .. Battery door is turned 90 degrees
Thank you. I have my answers now. I will try to close this thread.
